List of Walkern Rectors from 12th century to present day

The church of St Mary’s in Walkern was given to the Abbey of St John’s in Colchester in the last quarter of the 12th century by Walkern’s lord William (I) de Lanvalei who was also govenor of Colchester castle. St John’s Abbey had been built by a previous lord of Walkern and govenor of Colchester, Eudo Dapifer, who had been granted substantial lands in Hertfordshire and Essex because of the support his father had given to William the Conqueror in 1066.

Guy de Boclonde was appointed by St John’s Abbey as Walkern?s first rector. We then skip nearly 100 years…

Rev Pearce once informed me: “Peter, you sing like an old hen.”
