Holmes Farm, Walkern

Coming soon?

If you have any photos of Holmes farm that we can use, please do let us know

John Humberstone was named as Keeper of Walkern Park in 1428. Humberstone seems to have been a farmer of some standing, whose memorial is in the church. He lived at Walkern Park at a house called Holmes, likely to have some link with the present Holmes Farm. In 1420, during the reign of Henry V, John Humberstone is described as a yeoman of Walkern and had City connections. There is a record, describing him in 1428 as keeper of the park warren at Walkern. They are interesting because they got into the very little written local news of those days.

Dear Barbara,
I have been doing ancestry research on my family and found in the 1911 census that they resided on Holmes Farm Walkern. His name was William Copps and his wife was Sarah Ann Haggar Copps (My great grandfathers sister). Any information you could email my way would be appreciated very much. Good luck …

Dear Tom
I have been researching my husbands family tree and also came up with the names William and Sarah Copps as possibly great, great Grandparents. If you have any information that you could share that would be wonderful.
Thanks

I’ve done an extensive history of the Humberston family, including several chapters on the Humberstons of Walkern in the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries. I would be happy to send it to anyone who is interested, andgladly welcome any additions or corrections. I would also like to know anything you have about their history connected to Holmes Farm. Also what were the City connections of John Humberston 1420?

Dear Barbara,
I would be most interested in receiving a copy of your research on the Humberstone family. I trust this can be emailed to me.
I have been researching my family tree, and have come across a Mary Humberstone who appears to be my great grandmother x7, born around 1677 in Walkern, Hertfordshire.
I must go out to Walkern at some stage, plus other nearby villages, where many on one side of my family appear to have lived. We only live in North London, so it isn’t far.
To have done an extensive history of the family, I trust you will have Humberstone family as well.
All the best
Paul Smith
