Walkern is a village in Broadwater Hundred, Hertford Union, on a feeder of the river Beane, distant from Buntingford 6 miles, and 4 from Stevenage station, Great Northern Railway, and 32 from London. The church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, an ancient structure in the Norman style, with square tower and 5 bells, has been recently repaired; and the living is a rectory, value £600, with 16 acres of glebe, in the diocese of Rochester, and patronage of King’s College Cambridge; the present incumbent is the Rev John Harding MA. In the year 1712, Jane Wenham, who was a native of this village, was convicted of witchcraft, but was afterwards pardoned.  On the brook is a mill. The street is 1 mile long. The area of the parish is 2,94 acres, and the population in 1851 was 738. The assessment to the Income Tax in 1842 was £3,879. The Earl of Essex is lord of the manor.

Cromer is 1 mile north; Luffenhall 1 ½ miles north, both on the brook; Bassetts Green ¾ mile east.
