Peace in Our Time: Children of Walkern RBL, about 1936
A photo sent by Jean Archer (nee Hale) to the Walkern Journal, November 2010]
Written on the back is “Children of Walkern British Legion members taken in a Stevenage Procession around 1936.” As Jean says, it is very sad to think that it was taken only a short time before the Second World War began.
With its banner of ?Peace in our Time? there are echoes of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain?s ?Peace for our time? speech following the Munich Agreement in 1938, a phrase now remembered as ironic in that the German occupation of the Sudetenland began on the very next day.
The children are, from left to right. Back row: unknown boy, Joan Washington, John Dearman, Madge Washington, Betty Handscombe, David Boorman, Russell Spencer. Front Row: Peggy Collis, Evelyn Collis, Howard Dearman, Jean Hale, Beryl Hibbins
