Let’s Get Medieval at Walkern Fair!

Walkern Sports and Community Centre, 2pm on Sunday 3rd May

Sunday sees the annual Walkern Fair, the theme of which this year is Let’s Get Medieval.

This in one of the events in Walkern’s year of celebrations marking 800 years of Magna Carta, and will be opened at 2pm by William de Lanvalei, our Magna Carta Baron, and his longbow archers, Company de Lanvalei.

Try your hand at our have-a-go archery stall, and if you think you’re as strong as a medieval archer, try to draw a medieval longbow. Take a photo at our medieval selfie stall, and try to guess the weight of William de Lanvalei’s Great Helm.

Come and see us at the Walkern History Society stand where we will have a display relating to Wakern and Magna Carta. We will also be selling souvenirs celebrating our medieval past – mugs, teatowels, cards, posters, flags, books – along with plants and other items.

There will be a wide range of other attractions run by Walkern’s community groups, plus the ever popular dog show run by Heathlands Animal Centre. So come and join in the fun!

The Lanvalei name is known with regard to William who was Constable of Colchester castle in the12th century the connection at Walkern is interesting and likely a result of baronial land given by king William. To his followers

Will you be holding another Walkern Fair this year (2016). I live in Australia, but hope to be visiting England from April to July. I have a 4th ggrandfather from Walkern. His name was James Winters. regards. Marian
